CRUCIFIXION part 7
DO NOT GO ASTRAY
"DO NOT GO ASTRAY," SAID JESUS TO HIS DISCIPLES.
The hour was fast approaching for Jesus to die on the cross for our sin, the sin of the world. He has washed their feet. He tells them about the rooms waiting for them in heaven. He has promised the coming of the Holy Spirit in his place. He tells them to remain in him as a branch has to remain on the vine to produce much fruit. I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. Now he warns of the coming persecution and troubles which can cause them to go astray.
John 16:1-3 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact; a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
People go astray in their ways because they do not know the Father or Jesus. Jesus warns the disciples not to do the same. The people will persecute the disciples, thinking they are going to be rewarded by God. They have totally missed the message of the messiah, Jesus Christ. It is all to bring to pass the scripture written many years before: 'They hated me without reason.' Psalms 35:19 and Psalms 69:4
John 16:4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
Then Jesus tells them about the Holy Spirit and his work.

WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES LIKE A WIND GOING THRU AND FRO
The Holy Spirit goes thru and fro like the wind, but it is not the wind. He has his work to do, just as Jesus and the Father do. He is the third person of the Triune Godhead. We cannot see him but he indwells believers. He is a comforter, counselor, teacher, helper and guide. Jesus told the disciples he was sending the Holy Spirit to help them, and he explains the work of the Holy Spirit.
John 16:5-12 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me. 'Where are you going?' Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth: It is for your good I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor (Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me: in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. I have much to say to you, more than you can now bear.
In John 15:24 Jesus tells us: If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin.
It is the work of the Holy Spirit to convict the world of the guilt of sin. But Jesus had to come first, do sign and miracles no one else could do, yet; the world still refused to believe in him and the Father. Therefore, the Holy Spirit had to be sent. The Holy Spirit was sent to continue the work Jesus had started. If men do not know they are guilty of sin, they do not seek forgiveness. They can miss the free gift of salvation. So the Spirit had to come into the world to convict the world of the guilt of sin. Thus, Jesus saying, "It is better that I go and that I send him in my place."
John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."
They work as One. The Spirit takes from Jesus and makes it known to the disciples. Jesus takes from the Father because what belongs to the Father belongs to Jesus. Then the Spirit takes from Jesus and gives to the disciples, just as he gives to those who ask of him now. The Father God, Jesus and the Spirit know it all, all the time, and work together because they are One.
