CRUCIFIXION part 12
JESUS BEFORE ANNAS
Annas is the father-in-law of the high priest Caiaphas. Caiaphas has suggested that one man should die for the people. Things are not looking good for Jesus in court.
John 18:19 The chief priest (Annas) questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teachings.
18:20 Jesus answered him, "I have spoken publicly for everyone to hear. I have always taught in the synagogues or in the temple courtyard, where all the Jews gather. I have not said anything in secret.
18: 21 Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said to them. They know what I have said."
18:22 When Jesus said this, one of the guards standing near Jesus slapped his face and said, "Is that how you answer the chief priest?"
Obviously, this is a brown-nosing guard. A guard is to guard the prisoner, not be a judge. There was absolutely no reason to hit Our Lord. Satan was present there, manipulating the mind of even a lowly guard, making him strike Jesus for no reason.
18:23 Jesus replied to him, "If I have said anything wrong, tell me what it was. But if I have told the truth, why do you hit me?"
No answer from the guard or defense from the chief priest, Annas. And no lawyer.
18:24 Annas sent Jesus to Caiaphas, the chief priest that year. Jesus was still tied up.
In the book of Matthew verses 57-67 of chap.27, there is more amplification about the trial in front of the Jewish Council and the chief priest that year, Caiaphas.
Matt 27:57 those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the chief priest, where the scribes and the leaders had gathered together. 56. Peter followed at a distance until he came to the chief priest's courtyard. He went inside and sat with the guards to see how this would turn out. 59. The chief priest and the whole council were searching for false testimony to use against Jesus in order to execute him. 60. But they did not find any, although many came forward with false testimony. At last two men came forward. They stated, "This man said, " 'I can tear down God's temple and build it in three days.'"
62. the chief priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Don't you have any answer to what these men testify against you?" 63. But Jesus was silent.
Then the chief priest said to him, "Swear an oath in front of the living God and tell us, are you the messiah, the Son of God?"
64. Jesus answered him, "Yes I am. But I can guarantee that from now on you will see the Son of man in the highest position in heaven. He will be coming on the clouds of heaven."
65. Then the chief priest tore his robes in horror and said, "He has dishonored God! Why do we need any more witnesses? You've just heard him dishonor God! 66. What's your verdict?"
They answered, 'He deserves the death penalty.!"
67. Then they spit in his face, hit him with their fists, and some of them slapped him. 68 They said, "You Christ, if you are a prophet, tell us who hit you."
After this came the three denials of Jesus by Peter before the rooster crowed and the suicide death of Judas. His time before Pilate the governor had come. It was because no one could execute a person without the Roman government's approval. That is why he had to be brought before Pilate and had to be found guilty by him.
