CRUCIFIXION part 5
JESUS PROMISES THE HOLY SPIRIT
Jesus is going to die soon. So he is trying to make things as good as he can for the disciples. If we had information like he did, we would want to make things as easy as possible for our families to make the transition. So he promises to send someone in his place. He calls it the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit. And he commands them to love each other. That was the whole purpose of washing their their feet. He wanted them to unite and love one another.
John 14:15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command.
This verse applies to us too. We must trust and obey as the song says if we say we love him.
14:16-17 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever---the Spirit of Truth. the world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him or knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
Counselor is another name for the Holy Spirit. He is part of the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That is why Jesus says, he lives with you, or I live with you. He promises them that the Holy Spirit will be with them and live with them. The Holy Spirit will be with them after the Day of Pentecost in place of the Lord.
John 14:18-20 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
We do not see him, as they did in flesh and blood, but when we are saved, by virtue of the work of the Holy Spirit, we will be in Jesus and he with us. We believe because he first chose us. We see him in our spirit, which has been awaken to God's spiritual world.
John 14:21-24 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?" Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
He shows himself to us spiritually. We only have to learn of him and his teachings, learn to love and obey him, for him and the Father to come reside in us. Otherwise, if we do not obey his teachings, we show him we do not love him.
After a few more words, they left the Passover Feast and he started to teach them about the vine and the branches.
