CRUCIFIXION part 14
CRUCIFY HIM! CRUCIFY HIM!
The picture the Bible presents of crowds of people, mostly Jewish shouting, ' "Cruicfy Him!" "Crucify Him!" ' is unbelievable to me. But it was so. The story of Jesus shows the workings of the 'rule of the mob.' When a mob of people gets worked up over any little issue, usually instigated by a few interested felons, and it loses control of their own minds and thoughts, they become obsessed by whatever is presented to them as a group and become an easy target for manipulators. This time the felons were the high priests of the temple. They started to shout, "Crucify Him!" They did this over and over and the crowds joined in.
Pilate tried one last time to defend Jesus but was not successful.
John19;12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar."
19:13 When Pilate heard this he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha)
19:14 It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. "Here is your king, " Pilate said to the Jews.
19:15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.
Now, they are even denying God's headship, saying they have no king but Caesar. That is how far gone they are in their evilness trip.
19:16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soliders took charge of Jesus.
THE CRUCIFIXION
THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS
19:17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
19:18 Here they crucified him, and with him two others-one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
19:19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
19:20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified as near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
19:21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.
19:22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
19:23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarments remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
19:24 "Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Lets decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, "They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing." So this is what the soldiers did.
19:25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magadalene.
19:26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son,"
19:27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
This is what the apostle John writes about the Crucifixion, but we get more details in the book of Mark.
THE SOLDIERS MOCK JESUS
Mark 15:16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.
15:17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.
15:18 And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!"
15:19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staffand spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.
15:20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
15:21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.
Once he was crucified, more cruelty was done to him. We have seen in the book of John some of these things. Now we see others acts.
15:29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,
15:30 come down from the cross and save yourself!"
How does it feel when you know some facts others do not know, yet, you are unable to speak, and people are throwing their opinions and judgments at you. But you have to seem the fool and remain silent. This was our LORD. He knew what he was doing, but the foolish people were speaking out of ignorance.
15:31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he cannot save himself!
15:32 Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
