CRUCIFIXION part 11
BEFORE THE ROOSTER CROWS
PETER'S FIRST DENIAL
JESUS had warned Peter that he was going to deny him three times before the rooster crowed that morning. One cannot blame Peter because he was seeing how unjustly the Romans were treating Jesus, an innocent man,so he did not think that things would fare better for him. He went along with another disciple to see what was going to be done with Jesus, but; when push came to shove, he buckled. We cannot say we would have done better, because we have not faced that kind of persecutation in this country. Pray we never do, either.
John,18:15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard,
18:16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
18:17 "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter. He replied, "I am not."
18:18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
PETER'S SECOND AND THIRD DENIAL
18:25 As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it saying,"I am not."
18:26 One of the High priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, "Didn't I see you with him in the olive grove.?"
18:27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
Peter never forgot his failure on that night, but Jesus never held it against him. Matthew warns in chap.26:41 Jesus is speaking: "Watch and pray so that you do not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the body is weak." Peter thought he could follow Jesus anywhere, even to death, but his body refused to follow through. Adultery and fornication are especially bad. Temptation sets in and if you do not pray and turn it over to the Holy Spirit indwelling in you, the flesh may fail you. And like Peter, you may regret your actions at the 'crack of dawn.' But Jesus always forgives.
How was it that Jesus was able to face his ordeal on the cross as a man of flesh and blood? With much prayer and supplication to our Father in heaven. He died on the cross in his flesh and blood but competely free of sin, yet in much prayer. We are made of flesh and blood, therefore we are weak. That is why Jesus said, he was asking our Father to send the Holy Spirit to indwell in believers and to help us through this journey of ours on earth. We are nothing without our father God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
