CRUCIFIXION part 13
JESUS BEFORE PILATE
John 18:28 Early in the morning, Jesus was taken from Caiaphas' house to the governor's palace. The Jews wouldn't go into the palace. They didn't want to become unclean, since they wanted to eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What accusation are you making against this man?"
30 The Jews answered Pilate, "If he weren't a criminal, we wouldn't have handed him over to you."
31 Pilate told the Jews, "Take him and try him by your law." The Jews answered him, "We're not allowed to execute anyone."
32 In this way Jesus had predicted about how he would die came true.
33 Pilate went back into the palace, called for Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
34 Jesus replied, "Did you think of that yourself, or did others tell you about me?"
35 Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own people and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?"
36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. My kingdom does not have its origin on earth."
37 Pilate asked him, "So you are a king" Jesus replied, "You are correct in saying that I am a king, I have been born and have come into the world for this reason to testfy to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to me."
38 Pilate said to him, "What is truth?"
After Pilate said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, I don't find this man guilty of anything. 39 You have a custom that I should free one person for you at Passover. Would you like me to free the king of the Jews for you?
40 The Jews shouted again, 'Don't free this man! Free
Barabbas!
30 The Jews answered Pilate, "If he weren't a criminal, we wouldn't have handed him over to you."

PILATE SENDS JESUS TO HEROD
In the book of Luke, we read how Pilate not finding Jesus guilty of any wrong, learned Jesus was from Galilee. He then sends Jesus to Galilee for Herod to judge because Herod rules in Galilee.
LUKE 23:5 The priests and the crowd became more forceful. They said, "He stirs up the people throughout Judea with his teachings. He started in
Galilee and has come here."
6 When Pilate heard that, he asked if the man was from Galilee.
7. When Pilate found out that he was, he sent Jesus to Herod. Herod ruled Galilee and was in Jerusalem at the time.
8 Herod was very pleased to see Jesus. For a long time he had wanted to see him. He had heard about Jesus and hoped to see him perform some kind of miracle.
9 Herod asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus would not answer him.
10 Meanwhile, the chief priests and the scribes stood there and shouted their accusations against Jesus.
HEROD SENDS JESUS BACK TO PILATE
11 Herod and his soliders treated Jesus with contempt and made fun of him. They put a colorful robe on him and sent him back to Pilate. 12 So Herod and Pilate became friends that day. They had been enemies before this.
13 Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people.
14 He told them, "You brought me this man as someone who turns the people against the government. I've questioned him in front of you and haven't found this man guilty of the crimes of which you accuse him.
15 Neither could Herod. So he sent this man back to us. This man hasn't done anything to deserve the death penalty. 16 So I am going to have him whipped and set free.

PILATE'S LAST STAND
We have read of that foolish man Herod. He was insulting Jesus, wanting him to perform a miracle as if Jesus was a common street performer. Herod was a half Jew and if he was ruling Jerusalem and Galilee, he should have at least heard of the coming Messiah. He should have been more serious about the matter. God had placed a fool in place to not have his plan sidetracked. Then comes Pilate's last stand. He was not really concerned about the innocence of Jesus, he had other problems. A wife and an emperor to please. Also, friendships to cultivate, such as the one formed with Herod.
MATTHEW 27:19 While Pilate was judging the case, his wife sent him a message. It said, "Leave that innocent man alone, I've been very upset today because of a dream I had about him." 20 But the chief priests and leaders persuaded the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas and the execution of Jesus.
21 The governor asked them, "Which of the two do you want me to free for you?" They said, "Barabbas."
22 Pilate asked them, Then what should I do with Jesus, who is called Christ?" "He should be crucified!' they all said.
23 Pilate asked, Why? What has he done wrong?" But they began to shout loudly, "He should be crucified!"
24 Pilate saw that he was not getting anywhere. Instead, a riot was breaking out. So Pilate took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. He said, "I will not be guilty of killing this man. Do what you want!"
25 All the people answered, "The responsibility for killing him will rest on us and our children."
26: Then Pilate freed Barabbas for the people. but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.
Pilate did not wash his hands of the whole affair. Pilate had made a decision many years before that he was going to climb the ladder of success in the Roman Empire as an administrator/politician, which is what he was. And the day came when he came face to face with his destiny. So it is true that he had not had access to the teachings of Jesus. But Jesus was pretty clear with him, but Pilate turned his back on Jesus when he asked, "What is truth?" He should have examined Jesus further. But he was more afraid of the Jews breaking into a riot and the bad news reaching the emperor in Rome. So, his chance flew by. When he became good friends with Herod afterwards, we know that he really never heard what Jesus said to him. The death of an innocent man had not left a lasting impression on him. God chooses whom he will.
John 19:7 The Jews answered Pilate, "We have a law, and by that law he must die because he claimed to be the Son of God'" 8 When Pilate heard them say that, he became more afraid than ever. 9 He went into the palace again and asked Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus did not answer him. 10 So Pilate said to Jesus, "Aren't you going to answer me? Don't you know that I have the authority to free you or to crucify you?" 11 Jesus answered Pilate, "You wouldn't have any authority over me if it had not been given to you from above. That's why the man (Judas) who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.
Think on it, this is the sovereign will of God. Did Pilate and Judas have a chance in their past to take another path in life? Or were they born for their roles? Did God send them especially for their destinies? Even pastors with doctorates find it hard to answer this question. I say, if you hear the voice of the Lord in your heart calling you to come to Him and become a child of the LORD, do so now. Just ask him to forgive you of your sins and cleanse you with his blood and make you his child. He is ready to forgive and forget all your wrongs and make you a clean new creature, ready for heaven. Amen! Amen!
